The Technical Definition of Roofing
In construction, roofing refers to the structural envelope that forms the uppermost cover of a building. Its primary purpose is to provide shelter and protection from weather elements like rain, wind, snow, and extreme temperatures.
However, modern roofing is more than just tiles. It is a multi-layered engineering system designed for structural load distribution, thermal insulation, ventilation, and moisture management.
The Core Components of a Roof
- The Framework (Trusses/Rafters): The load-bearing timber frame that supports the weight of the roof.
- Underlayment (Breather Membrane): A water-resistant, breathable sheet that catches any rainwater that slips past tiles and allows internal moisture to escape.
- Battens and Counter-Battens: Timber strips nailed to rafters that provide the structure to hook slates or tiles.
- Roof Cover: The visible outer barrier (slates, concrete tiles, metal sheets, or membrane).
